How Much Can I Earn?
The new feed in tariffs (FIT) became available in the United Kingdom in 1st April 2010 and are currently available to new solar PV installations using an MCS certified product and installer.
Those investing in solar PV will benefit in three ways, these are:
Generation Tariff
A set rate paid for each unit (kWh) of electricity you generate.
Export Tariff
A payment from your energy supplier for each unit (kWh) you export back into the electricity grid. Currently this is 41.3p per kWh for solar systems under 4kWh.
Energy Bill Savings
As a result of generating and using your own electricity, you will see a significant reduction in your electricity bills as you will be buying less units.
The exact figure of 'how much can I earn?' is dependant of a variety of factors. These include;
The type of solar PV system you install and the amount of kWh it generates. The level of payment your utility company will give you as part of the export tariff.
The amount of electricity you use in the day to day running of your home, which is of course directly affected by the energy efficiency of your home (insulation, double glazing, draft proofing, etc.) and unnecessary energy usage such as lights left on, unwatched TVs or radios left playing, etc. At the end of the day, the cheapest kWh is that you don't use.
The Energy Saving Trust administers grants for domestic photovoltaic systems, and also have a cash back calculator on their website, click here for more details.
